Brake Mounts & Rotor Sizes

Two separate things have to match: the caliper and the rotor

Disc brake compatibility splits into two independent questions. First, does the brake caliper physically bolt to the fork or frame? Second, does the rotor's mounting interface match the hub it's bolted to? Getting one right doesn't guarantee the other, so it's worth treating them as separate checks.

Caliper mount standards

Calipers bolt to the fork (front) or frame/adapter (rear) using one of a small number of mount standards, most commonly Post Mount and Flat Mount. These are physically different bolt patterns — a Flat Mount caliper cannot be bolted to a Post Mount fork, full stop. There's no adapter trick that makes a mismatched mount standard work; the caliper and the fork or frame mount need to be the same standard, or connected through a proper mount adapter designed for that specific conversion.

Note that post-mount sizing (the common PM160/180/200 designations) isn't something a compatibility checker models directly as a separate spec — instead, the protection here comes from checking rotor size against the fork or frame's published minimum and maximum, described below.

Rotor interface: 6-bolt vs. Center Lock

Separately from the caliper mount, the rotor itself attaches to the wheel hub using one of two interfaces: the traditional 6-bolt pattern, or Shimano's Center Lock splined interface. These are not interchangeable without an adapter, and critically, the fix only works in one direction:

  • Center Lock rotor on a 6-bolt hub: this is a hard mismatch. No adapter exists to make a Center Lock rotor mount to a 6-bolt hub, so this combination simply doesn't work.
  • 6-bolt rotor on a Center Lock hub: this direction does have a common, everyday fix — a lockring-style adapter (of the type made popular by parts like Shimano's SM-RTAD05) lets a standard 6-bolt rotor mount onto a Center Lock hub. It's worth noting this kind of adapter is typically only rated for one-piece rotors, not two-piece designs with a separate carrier.

The direction matters because of how each interface is built — a Center Lock hub's splines have nowhere to accept 6-bolt holes without an adapter piece, while a 6-bolt hub can accept an adapter that itself carries the Center Lock splines.

Rotor size: bigger isn't always compatible, smaller isn't always fine either

Rotor diameter affects braking power and heat management — a larger rotor (commonly 200 mm or 220 mm on the front of enduro and DH bikes) has more surface area to dissipate heat and generally more leverage for stopping power, which matters on long, steep, or repeated descents. Smaller rotors (commonly seen on lighter trail setups) save weight and can be plenty for less demanding terrain.

But rotor size isn't infinitely flexible in either direction:

  • Going over the fork or frame's published maximum is treated as a warning rather than a hard stop — it's flagged because it exceeds the max the manufacturer has published for that fork or frame, but a caliper adapter that spaces the caliper outward can often make an oversized rotor work.
  • Going under a fork's native minimum rotor size is a hard error. Adapters only work by spacing a caliper outward to accommodate a bigger rotor — they cannot space it inward for a smaller one. If a fork's documentation states a minimum rotor size (some forks explicitly state something like "Minimum Rotor Size: 200mm"), a smaller rotor physically cannot be made to work on that fork, adapter or not.

Put together, the builder runs three related but distinct checks:

  • Caliper mount vs. fork/frame: front and rear brake mount standards are checked against the fork's and frame's mount type; a mismatch is an error.
  • Rotor mount vs. hub: rotor interface (6-bolt vs. Center Lock) is checked against the hub, direction-aware — Center Lock-on-6-bolt is an error with no fix, while 6-bolt-on-Center-Lock is a warning that names the adapter that solves it.
  • Rotor size vs. fork/frame limits: rotor size is checked against the published maximum (warning if exceeded) and against a fork's native minimum rotor size (error if the rotor is smaller than that floor).

Practical takeaways

  • Confirm caliper mount standard (Post Mount vs. Flat Mount) matches your fork and frame before buying calipers.
  • If you're mixing 6-bolt and Center Lock parts, remember the fix only works one way: 6-bolt rotor onto a Center Lock hub, via an adapter.
  • Bigger rotors generally mean more stopping power and heat capacity, which matters more on long or steep descents — but check the fork/frame's published max first.
  • Never assume you can size down below a fork's stated minimum rotor size; there is no adapter that makes that work.
