Drivetrain Systems & Speed Counts

Two questions that both have to check out

A drivetrain is really four parts working as one system: shifter, derailleur, cassette, and chain. For any of them to work together, two independent questions both have to come back "yes": are they all the same system, and are they all the same speed count? Getting one right doesn't cover the other — a shifter and derailleur can be the same speed count and still be from incompatible systems, and vice versa.

The systems

The catalog groups modern drivetrains into a small number of systems: SRAM Eagle (the long-running 1x mechanical and electronic Eagle lineup), SRAM Transmission (the newer T-Type direct-mount derailleurs, covered in more depth in the UDH guide), Shimano's 12-speed lineup, and a distinct 7-speed SRAM DH system built around downhill-specific groups. Parts from different systems are not interchangeable — a shifter built for one system's cable pull and ratcheting pattern will not correctly actuate a derailleur from another system, regardless of how similar the speed counts look on paper.

Speed count is a separate axis

Independently of system, shifter, derailleur and cassette all have to agree on speed count — how many gears the cassette actually has. Two 12-speed drivetrains from different systems still won't work together even though the numbers match, because speed count and system are two different specs that both have to line up. A shifter built to index 12 clicks per cassette can't correctly shift an 11-speed cassette's spacing, and vice versa, on top of the system needing to match separately.

Actuation: cable vs. wireless

Layered on top of system and speed count is a third, related concept: actuation. A shifter or derailleur is either cable-actuated (a mechanical trigger pulling a physical cable) or electronic (a wireless, battery-powered signal — SRAM's AXS system is the mountain bike market's example). These two mechanisms are fundamentally different ways of triggering a shift, so a cable shifter cannot drive a wireless derailleur, and a wireless shift pod cannot drive a cable-pull derailleur, independent of whether the system and speed count otherwise match.

The one documented exception

SRAM documents one specific carve-out to the strict one-system rule: any of its AXS wireless controllers can drive any of its AXS derailleurs, regardless of which system tier (Eagle AXS vs. Transmission) that controller or derailleur is marketed under. This is a real, maker-documented cross-compatibility within SRAM's own wireless ecosystem — it does not extend to mixing with Shimano, and it does not relax the separate cable-vs-wireless actuation rule, which still applies exactly as before.

Chainrings deserve their own callout

SRAM Transmission also introduces a distinct chain design (sometimes called Flattop) built specifically to pair with T-Type chainrings. That pairing is direction-sensitive: a Flattop chain on a non-T-Type ring is a real mismatch, but a T-Type ring with a standard Eagle chain is documented as working fine.   • System match: shifter, derailleur, cassette, and chain must share one system (SRAM Eagle, SRAM Transmission, Shimano 12-speed, or SRAM's 7-speed DH system) — a mismatch is an error.
  • Speed match: the same four parts must also share one speed count, checked independently of system — a mismatch is a separate error.
  • Actuation match: shifter and derailleur actuation (cable vs. electronic) must agree — a cable shifter paired with a wireless derailleur (or the reverse) is an error.
  • SRAM AXS exemption: an electronic SRAM controller is exempted from the strict system-match rule against SRAM AXS derailleurs specifically (it still has to be wireless-to-wireless) — that exemption does not apply to Shimano parts at all.

Practical takeaways

  • Check system AND speed count separately when shopping — matching one doesn't guarantee the other.
  • Don't assume a wireless SRAM shift pod will drive any wireless derailleur you like outside SRAM's own AXS lineup — the exemption is SRAM-to-SRAM only.
  • A cable shifter and an AXS derailleur will never work together, no matter how closely the system or speed count otherwise line up.
  • If you're running SRAM Transmission, remember its Flattop chain has its own chainring requirement, separate from the system/speed/actuation checks above.
