Two honest options, not a hierarchy
A full-suspension bike isn't a strictly better version of a hardtail, and a hardtail isn't just a cheaper compromise — they're two legitimately different tools that trade the same handful of things (cost, maintenance, and how they handle rough terrain) in opposite directions. This guide is about the buying decision. Cost
A rear shock, the pivot hardware and bearings that let the rear triangle move, and the extra structure needed to carry all of that all cost real money to design and manufacture. Comparing two frames at a similar material and component tier, the full-suspension version is almost always more expensive than the hardtail version of a similar platform, simply because it's carrying more hardware. That gap tends to widen at the budget end of the market, where a hardtail can put a genuinely capable frame and fork under a rider at a price a comparable full-suspension bike can't match.
Maintenance
A rear shock needs periodic air-can or coil service, and pivot bearings wear and eventually need replacing — routine maintenance, but maintenance all the same, and it adds up over the life of the bike. A hardtail's rear triangle is a solid, bolted structure with nothing to service back there at all; the fork is still a wear item on both bike types, but a hardtail simply has one fewer suspension system to maintain, inspect, and eventually pay a shop (or your own time) to service.
Terrain and ride feel
Rough, fast, technical terrain is where full suspension earns its extra weight and cost: the rear wheel can move independently of the rider, which keeps the tire tracking the ground and takes a real edge off repeated hard impacts. A hardtail transmits more of that chatter straight to the rider, which rewards active riding and good line choice, and can be genuinely tiring on sustained rough descents. On the other hand, smooth, flowy, or jump-oriented terrain — cross-country trails, pump tracks, dirt jump lines (see the Dirt Jump Bikes 101 guide) — plays to a hardtail's strengths: it's lighter, more directly responsive underfoot, and there's no suspension bob to fight while sprinting or pumping terrain for speed. Neither terrain preference is the "right" one; it's genuinely about what you ride most.
What rear travel numbers actually mean
A full-suspension bike's rear travel figure describes how far the rear wheel can move from fully extended to fully compressed — it's a fact about the whole rear end working together, not a spec on any single part. A hardtail simply has no rear travel to speak of, because there's no rear suspension system to produce a travel figure from in the first place.
Why hardtails show 0mm in the rear-travel filter
The Complete Bikes tab's rear-travel range slider is explicitly labeled "0mm = hardtail," and that's a deliberate design choice rather than a placeholder. A hardtail frame carries no rear-travel field in the catalog at all — the data schema doesn't allow one, since there's genuinely nothing to record. Rather than treating that absence as an unknown value that could silently vanish from a range search (say, a search narrowed to "100–160mm" quietly dropping every hardtail from the results), the filter reports a real, honest 0 for a hardtail specifically so a 0-inclusive range keeps hardtails visibly in the results instead of hiding them. It's a statement about the filter's own honesty, not a claim that a hardtail frame has literally zero flex or give in its materials — that's a different, much smaller-scale thing than the rear-wheel-travel figure this facet tracks.
