The one structural difference
A full-suspension frame has a rear shock connecting the front triangle to a rear linkage, so the rear wheel can move independently of the rest of the bike. A hardtail frame has no rear shock at all — the rear triangle is rigid, bolted solid to the front triangle, and only the fork moves. Everything else about a frame (wheel size support, headset, bottom bracket, brake mount, dropper seat-tube diameter, fork travel rating) works exactly the same way whether the frame is a hardtail or a full-suspension design. The rear shock is the only thing that's structurally different, and it's an all-or-nothing difference — a frame either has a rear shock mount or it doesn't.
What the shock block actually is
On a full-suspension frame, four specs travel together as a single block: the shock's eye-to-eye mounting length, its stroke (how far the shaft moves), its mount hardware style (standard eyelet vs. trunnion), and the frame's rated rear-wheel travel. All four only make sense in the context of an actual rear shock bolted between the triangles — a hardtail frame simply has none of them, because there's no shock to describe.
Why picking a shock for a hardtail is a hard error
Because a hardtail has no rear-shock mount to bolt anything to, selecting a rear shock alongside a hardtail frame is flagged as a plain error, not a warning — there's no partial-fit case here the way there is with, say, a slightly-off stroke length. It's the same category of impossibility as trying to bolt a caliper to a mount standard that isn't there: the part the frame is missing simply cannot be added by picking a different shock.
The flip side: a shock slot that isn't required
Because a hardtail is a legitimately complete bike without any rear shock, the build's completeness check treats the rear-shock slot as not applicable at all on a hardtail frame — an unfilled shock slot doesn't count against you the way an unfilled fork or wheel slot would. This mirrors how the builder treats a small number of other frame-dependent slots (like the cassette slot on a wheel with a built-in cassette) as conditionally required rather than always-required.
Ride feel: the part the tool doesn't (and can't) score
Beyond what bolts to what, hardtail and full-suspension bikes ride differently in ways compatibility checking has nothing to say about. A hardtail transmits more trail chatter and impact directly to the rider, which rewards a more active riding style and rewards line choice on rough ground; it's also lighter for a given frame material and has no shock to maintain or tune. A full-suspension bike absorbs more of that impact through the rear wheel, which tends to keep the tire tracking the ground better on rough, fast terrain at the cost of some added weight, moving parts, and shock maintenance. Neither is a "better" build in a compatibility sense — the tool has no opinion on ride quality, only on whether the parts you picked can physically go together.
