What "mullet" means on a mountain bike

A mullet, or MX, build pairs a larger 29-inch wheel up front with a smaller 27.5-inch wheel out back. The idea is to get the front wheel's easier roll-over and extra traction while keeping the smaller rear wheel's agility and additional clearance around the rider and swingarm — useful on frames where a full 29-inch rear wheel would crowd the tire against the frame or shock.

It's a deliberate combination, not just "leftover parts from two different bikes." Frame makers that support mullet configurations design the geometry (particularly bottom bracket height) around that specific wheel pairing, because swapping just the rear wheel size on a bike not designed for it changes the bottom bracket height and overall geometry balance.

Why the frame has to be designed for it

Not every frame supports every wheel combination. A frame is typically designed and rated for one or more of: 29-inch front and rear, 27.5-inch front and rear, or the mullet mix of 29 front / 27.5 rear. Putting the "wrong" wheel size in the wrong end for a given frame can throw off the intended bottom bracket height and handling balance — which is exactly why frame manufacturers specify which configurations a given frame supports rather than leaving it open-ended.

The reverse mullet: not a real configuration

One combination that essentially never appears in the real world is the "reverse mullet" — a smaller 27.5-inch wheel up front paired with a larger 29-inch wheel in the rear. No manufacturer publishes or rates this setup, because it works against the same geometry logic that makes a standard mullet useful: the front wheel is smaller than the rear wheel, which tends to work against the front-end handling benefits that make wheel-size choices meaningful in the first place. It isn't a matter of taste or preference — it's simply not a configuration any frame supports.

Front and rear each need to be internally consistent

Beyond the frame's supported configuration, the parts on each end of the bike need to agree with each other. On the front, the fork, front wheel, and front tire all need to be built around the same wheel size — you can't run a 29-inch fork with a 27.5-inch front wheel, for instance. The same logic applies separately to the rear: rear wheel and rear tire need to match each other's size. A mullet build, then, is really "one consistent size up front, a different consistent size out back, in a combination the frame actually supports" — not a free mix-and-match of any wheel size anywhere.

How BuildMyMTB checks this

The builder checks wheel-size compatibility in three layers:

  • Front-group agreement: the fork, front wheel, and front tire must all agree on wheel size.
  • Rear-group agreement: the rear wheel and rear tire must likewise agree on wheel size.
  • Frame configuration match: the resulting front/rear pairing — 29/29, 27.5/27.5, or the 29-front/27.5-rear mullet — must be one the selected frame actually supports, based on the frame's list of supported wheel configurations.

If no frame has been picked yet, the tool still protects you from an impossible combination: a front/rear pairing that doesn't correspond to any real configuration (such as the 27.5-front/29-rear reverse mullet) is rejected outright, since no frame anywhere supports it. Once you do pick a frame, the check narrows further to whatever configurations that specific frame is rated for.
