Two specs, neither of them about size

A mountain bike tire carries two brand-specific specs beyond its basic width and wheel size: casing and compound. Neither one is a fit dimension the way width or wheel size is — you can't get a casing or compound "wrong" in a way that stops a tire from mounting. They describe how the tire rides and holds up, not whether it physically fits.

Casing: the tire's structural layers

Casing describes the tire's carcass construction — how many layers of fabric make up the tire body, how they're reinforced, and how resistant the sidewall is to cuts, pinch flats, and squirm under hard cornering loads. A lighter casing rolls faster and saves weight; a heavier, more reinforced casing survives rock strikes and repeated hard impacts better but weighs more and rolls with slightly more resistance. Enduro and downhill riders typically lean toward the reinforced end of a given brand's casing range; cross-country riders typically lean toward the lightest casing that still holds air reliably.

Compound: the rubber itself

Compound describes the rubber formulation used in the tread — its hardness, grip, and rolling resistance. Softer compounds generally grip better, especially on wet rock and roots, at the cost of wearing faster and rolling with more resistance; harder or faster-rolling compounds last longer and roll quicker at some cost to outright grip. Many tires mix compounds across the tread — a harder, faster-rolling compound down the center for rolling speed, paired with a softer compound on the side knobs for cornering grip.

Why the catalog doesn't use one universal scale

It would be convenient if "casing" and "compound" were a single number every brand agreed on, but they aren't — each tire manufacturer names its own casing tiers and compound formulations, and those names don't map cleanly onto a shared scale across brands. A Maxxis EXO+ casing, a Schwalbe Super Trail casing, and a Continental Endurance casing are all reinforced, trail-oriented options from their respective brand's lineup, but they aren't measured the same way and aren't interchangeable labels for the same thing. Rather than force every brand's naming into an invented universal tier system (which would mean guessing at equivalencies the manufacturers themselves don't publish), the catalog records each tire's casing and compound using that brand's own published name for it. If you're comparing across brands, treat the position within each brand's own lineup (their lightest vs. their most reinforced casing, for instance) as the meaningful comparison, not the specific name.

Why these fields are optional

Casing and compound are recorded only when the manufacturer names them for that specific tire — some lighter cross-country tires, for instance, don't carry a distinct named casing tier the way a dedicated enduro or DH tire does. Rather than invent a name where the manufacturer doesn't publish one, the catalog leaves the field unset for tires where no distinct name exists.

Casing and compound are purely descriptive fields — they're shown on a tire's spec card so you can compare durability and grip characteristics, but neither one feeds the compatibility checker at all. If you don't see a casing or compound listed for a tire, that means the manufacturer doesn't name a distinct tier for it — not that data is missing by mistake.
