What UDH is

UDH stands for Universal Derailleur Hanger — a standardized derailleur hanger interface that SRAM introduced to work identically across many different frame brands and models, rather than every frame needing its own unique hanger shape.

What "Transmission" changes

SRAM's Transmission (T-Type) derailleurs take the UDH concept a step further: rather than bolting to a traditional replaceable hanger, a full-mount Transmission derailleur mounts directly to the frame itself using the UDH interface as a structural mounting point, not just a replaceable breakaway piece. That direct-mount design is why Transmission derailleurs specifically require a UDH-compatible frame — the derailleur's entire mounting strategy depends on that standardized interface being present.

Frames without UDH aren't necessarily locked out forever

A frame that didn't originally ship with a UDH interface isn't automatically a dead end for Transmission. Some frame manufacturers have released documented UDH retrofit kits for older models, effectively adding the interface to a frame that didn't have it from the factory. Frames with a maker-documented retrofit path available are a softer case than frames with no such option at all, since a real, documented fix exists.

The chain and chainring side: T-Type vs. Flattop

Transmission drivetrains also use a distinct chain design (sometimes referred to as Flattop) with a different link shape, pin, and roller design than a traditional Eagle chain. This chain is designed to pair with T-Type chainrings specifically.

The compatibility here runs one direction only:

  • A Transmission Flattop chain paired with a non-T-Type (standard) chainring is a mismatch — the unique link shape, pin, and roller design of the Flattop chain aren't documented as compatible with a standard ring.
  • The reverse is fine: a T-Type chainring paired with a standard Eagle chain works, because T-Type rings are documented as backward-compatible with Eagle chains.

So if you're running a T-Type crankset but not the full Transmission chain, you're generally fine — the concern only arises when the Flattop chain itself is paired with a chainring that isn't built for it.

The rest of the drivetrain: staying within one system

Beyond the UDH/chain specifics, a drivetrain generally needs to stay within one system and one speed count across the shifter, derailleur, cassette, and chain — SRAM Eagle, SRAM Transmission, and Shimano 12-speed are mutually incompatible systems, and mixing across them doesn't work.

Actuation is a related but separate concern: a cable-actuated (mechanical) shifter cannot drive an electronic, wireless (AXS) derailleur — the two rely on fundamentally different mechanisms to trigger a shift.

There is one documented exemption worth knowing: SRAM states that all of its AXS wireless controllers work with all of its AXS derailleurs, regardless of which "system" tier they're marketed under. So an electronic SRAM controller isn't held to the strict one-system rule the way mechanical parts are — its real constraint is simply cable-vs-wireless actuation, not system-tier matching. This exemption is specific to SRAM's own documented AXS ecosystem and doesn't extend to mixing with Shimano.

How BuildMyMTB checks this

  • UDH requirement: a direct-mount (UDH) Transmission derailleur paired with a non-UDH frame is an error. If no frame has been picked yet, it's shown as an informational heads-up rather than an error, since there's nothing concrete to check against yet.
  • Retrofit-aware tiering: for frames with a maker-documented UDH retrofit kit available, the same mismatch is downgraded from an error to a warning, and it comes with a concrete fix reference rather than a flat rejection. Frames with no retrofit option stay a hard error.
  • Chain vs. chainring: a Transmission Flattop chain on a non-T-Type chainring is an error; the reverse (T-Type ring with an Eagle chain) is intentionally left silent, since that pairing is documented as fine.
  • System, speed, and actuation: shifter, derailleur, cassette, and chain are checked for a single consistent system and speed count, and cable shifters are blocked from pairing with AXS wireless derailleurs — except that SRAM's documented AXS-controllers-work-with-all-AXS-derailleurs exemption is respected rather than flagged.

Practical takeaways

  • If you want a full-mount Transmission derailleur, confirm your frame is UDH-compatible, or has a documented retrofit kit, before buying.
  • Running a T-Type crankset with a standard Eagle chain is fine; running the Transmission Flattop chain with a non-T-Type ring is not.
